Metal Marc Out of the wreckage brought upon by dual personal tragedies comes an outstanding album that is sorrowful and victorious. Once you listen to this a few times, it’s hard to want to listen to anything else for a while. This is my front runner for metal album of 2021, and perhaps even my overall AOTY. Favorite track: Far Beyond Death.

Stumgar what an amazing album, dark, hopeful, sorrowful yet comforting.

"Far Beyond the reach of death
There is a place of life
only to be found
Through faith in Jesus Christ" Favorite track: Far Beyond Death.

nolanvoid007 As someone who has followed Derek's work for over 20 years, it's really nice to hear something that he has poured his heart and soul into. It feels fresh but still has many hints of the familiar. The new elements and the older are what continue to bring me back.

tbrooooo Lost my grandfather this past week to cancer & it’s been one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to deal with, But I found this album yesterday morning (to me what seemed like fate). Thank you for writing and bringing such raw emotion , I needed it

Death has cast its shadow on you But do not fall in dismay It is but a doorway We all must cross one day The winds of change Are here The life once known is gone Fading Enter the realm where time has no grip Pass through the gateway Far beyond the reach of death There is a place of pure life only to be found Through faith in Jesus Christ Life is but a breath A fleeting moment in the fabric of existence Enter a place where death cannot dwell Where no mind can fathom the glory Far beyond the reach of death There is a place of pure life only to be found Through faith in Jesus Christ
2.
This world has drained the soul And wearing this mask took its toll A place where once we dined Held the reason for all to find My complacency I was too blind to see Deep feelings of despair Write the note, your heart laid bare Ignoring signs leading to the fall Pull the trigger and end it all Step into His light Don't give up the fight You are worth more A soul worth fighting for There is not a single life You don't see God help me be a better me And reach out to the one in need Forgive me for my apathy Step into His light Don't give up the fight You are worth more A soul worth fighting for
3.
Bleeding internally Legs go numb Hurting inside Your face trying to hide the pain I feel you slipping away As I hold you tight I feel you slipping away As you descend into the night You kiss my cheek as if to say it's okay My end is here I'm on my way I feel you slipping away As I hold you tight I feel you slipping away As you descend into the night -solo- In a single day The sunshine turned to rain Happiness turned to mourning As you were released from all your pain I felt you slip away Crossing the bridge to the other side I felt you slip away As you ascend into the light
4.
Ashes 05:48
I have lived a full life Journeyed to distant shores Explored the beauty of the land Sailed the oceans of the north -solo- No longer will I roam The trumpet calls me home The piano plays its sweet melody Holding onto my memory To those I left behind I pray that peace you will find No longer will I roam I have gone to my final home Spread my ashes across the earth Don't weep over me but remember me
5.
Remembrance 02:58
6.
Blue to Gray 07:01
It cuts me deep to see you suffer Day by day losing your strength The oxygen deprived within your blood Slowly struggling to take a breath Christmas Day was the last I saw you the last time to embrace you and tell you that I love you Two weeks later was the last we spoke Revealing plans to see you soon To celebrate another year of life Unaware saying our final goodbye Received ominous word Early on a Sunday morning Holding back the tears I receive the news Your heartbeat regressed Through the night Struggled to awaken from sleep I remember the sky that day How it changed from blue to gray The cold came rushing in and the clouds poured forth their rain The rain turned to snow Blanketing the ground in pure white All became so calm And your spirit took flight
7.
A yearning for contact The feeling ignored Now it's too late Disbelief overtakes me As I pick up the phone No more life The ones we should have seen The words we should have said What was has come and gone The ones we should have seen The words we should have said What was has come and gone Now only memories live on Received the call One hour before the funeral Succumbed to addiction Now I stare at your corpse The ones we should have seen The words we should have said What was has come and gone The ones we should have seen The words we should have said What was has come and gone Mourners pass the body Was the fix worth the price? One last look to remember Tears and sorrow Engulfs the congregation Ingesting the pain Of a life gone too soon
8.
Three by three We carried your body To the field Of the dead The rain was cold The air was thick The north wind wrapped around my neck Sending chills deep within The gathering shivers Hearing the final words “From ash to ash dust to dust” The rain was cold The air was thick The north wind wrapped around my neck Sending chills deep within As loved ones gathered To hear the final eulogy They lowered your body down Deep into the ground The celebration of your life As mourners gather round Now the Almighty God beckons you To receive your Heavenly Crown
9.
Expiration of life befalls again Drink the potion to numb the pain Drowning your grief, it left its mark And your slowly drifting into the dark Convinced it has become the answer Dependency grows like cancer Reliance to keep the hurt at bay Embrace the demons, pushing the angels away Consuming every fiber of life Weaving manipulation and a tangled web of lies Convinced it has become the answer Dependency grows like cancer Reliance to keep the hurt at bay Embrace the demons, pushing the angels away Secretly ingest the substance While imbibing the sweet nectar Eyes roll back, the tongue hardens The draining of life halted as the needle revives The lights went out, the mind was lost A cold awakening in a concrete box The dagger slices the wrist Blood pools upon the sheets Yet all is not lost Was it your soul you gave Has life or death been found When eternity descends upon your grave?

about

Epic, heavy, and somber describes the moments as you are taken on an emotional journey, engulfed in a wall of sound and atmosphere. Layer upon layer of interweaving melodies fuse together with bombastic 8-string guitars, fretless bass, piano, atmospheric acoustic guitar, soaring leads, and choirs which give way to intense guttural vocals and passionate vocal harmonies. Crowned in Sorrow crafts its own sound with a nod to influences such as Swallow the Sun, Shape of Despair, Paramæcium, Opeth, Schaliach, and November's Doom.

Lyrically, this album takes a faith-based approach and deals with death, grief, and loss as every song is about someone or something in my life that has died.

9/10 "...an epic and impressive piece of art" -The Metal Onslaught
